21 Weeks

21 Weeks
53lbs
?? inches tall.

Still has a couple of upper puppy premolars, but I expect them to fall out by the end of the week. The same ones are still in place on the bottom, too, and I think the lower front teeth are all still baby teeth. I haven't seen any of those fall out/grow in yet, but he's not great about letting me pull down his lower lip to see them, so... it's possible I missed that whole thing. His adult upper canine teeth are both coming in- behind the baby ones, which haven't fallen out yet. They are typically the last to fall out and it should happen sometime within the next couple of weeks, so I'm not worried, but it will be something to watch, and it's interesting, as this hasn't happened this way before with the other pups. It was really funny and a surprise to look in his mouth this morning and see those points peeking out of his gums on either side of the baby canines.

His teeth have really been bothering him this week. Lots of bleeding from the loose baby premolars,
so they should be out soon. I've had to start putting his Nylabone in the freezer. He likes that, plus it keeps him cool on the warmer days. He was up at 4am chewing on it this morning.

I wish this dog would sleep past 6am... He still doesn't.

The leash walking is going well. He picks up less and less with his mouth and is getting good about "leave it" instead of grabbing the odd rock, piece of trash, etc... and will "drop it" most of the time when told, if the "leave it" gets ignored.

Two mornings of vomiting nothing but stomach acid at around 7:15 this week. Hoping that's related to the teething. Not sure what it could be, otherwise.

He's great at "sit", "shake", "down", "high five", and is learning "wave" and "speak". He's started mimicking Kansas in the mornings, when she "woo-woo-woo"s after we return from our walk and before I feed her- only for him it's more of a "bark-bark-bark" in her exact same tone. He does it right after she does. It's hysterical.

20 Weeks

20 Weeks Old
50.6 lbs
?? Inches Tall

Still has a few upper deciduous premolars. Hasn't lost any more of his bottom teeth. One set of adult upper premolars to go!

Wild child has spent the week chewing/ingesting entire body parts of his plush toys. Last Thursday night, I had to take away one of his plush lions, because he was about to chew completely through a plush limb. The next morning, I while inspecting the plush lion and cutting off the dangling leg, I realized itwas already missing one limb... and the tail...

I thought I'd cut off all of the lion's tails weeks ago, in a preemptive strike when I noticed him chewing on the first one (the plush lion theme is alive and well in this house).

I guess not.

The weekend was spent keeping an eye out for any issues with intestinal blockages, and checking poop- especially since each lion leg contained a mini squeaker.

I thought I found the missing leg in Kal's poop on Friday evening.

That was before I realized it must have been the tail...

He threw up Saturday morning, at 5:30, but had eaten it all by the time I got in there to check. He's a fast thing, dang it!

4:30 am Sunday morning, I again flew out of bed to the sound of Kal puking. This time I was prepared and threw one of a stack of towels on the mess-  plus, he'd actually vomited outside of the crate this time... that kept him from eating much.

It smelled FOUL!

I'm not squeamish, but it was bad. I was staring at this solid pile of smelly stuff wondering "What in the hell...?!"

Oh, wait, THIS is the missing lion's leg. Completely intact. Squeaker still inside.

I took that lion, and one other, out of his crate. No more snuggle buddies at bedtime for Kal.

I never even noticed the Spot "Flat Cats" lion was missing until he paused to vomit up another tube-shaped was of brown fabric in the middle of our walk this morning. It took me a while to figure out what it was (while holding my breath).

He has plenty of Nylabones in his bed, two different strengths. He just prefers something softer, sometimes.

Can't wait til the chewing is over.

19 Weeks

19 Weeks
46.4 lbs
23 inches tall
All baby upper incisors- gone; adult incisors have grown in.
Lost one lower puppy premolar.
Eruption cyst- GONE!

(We found out last week that's what the swelling in his gums on the lower right side was. You just have to finally Google the right combination of words. Turns out it's totally normal- and something human babies experience often. Fluid builds up between the tooth enamel and the gums, and creates a hematoma, which typically goes away once the tooth is cut. The body reabsorbs the fluid. Score another "I was right." for me! Never had a puppy experience this before, but... this guy came with all kinds of crazy ailments... )

18 Weeks

18 Weeks old
43.2lbs
22 inches tall

Baby Teeth Lost: 3 upper incisors- one adult tooth coming in.
Molars (second pair) top and bottom left have come through.
Right top molar is almost through.
Right bottom molar- first came through a week or so ago. Second is coming soon, swelling on that side that has been present for the past 8 weeks is has been about half what it was previously. However, the remaining swelling has now produced a soft bubble, noted as of yesterday. Hoping it will drain and be normal once the tooth appears. Spoke with the vet about it 2 weeks ago, and she said to just keep watching it. It's been weird, that's for sure. Still unsure whether there is an issue/infection or if it's part of teething. It's not a part of teething I've ever experienced before.

It doesn't seem to bother him. He's not in pain, or pawing at it.
